Plans for a Q2 2009 HackerDojo are now underway at http://hackerdojo.pbwiki.com/

This project will attempt to establish a hacker commune on the San Francisco peninsula. The intent is to use it for nearfull-time hackery, mini-conferences, barcamps, devhouses, and the like. The intent is to have a simple open office space with 24/7 access, tables, chairs, whiteboards and caffeine galore, high-speed net drop with wireless, and bean bags.

Possible Spaces

We're looking at spots that are 2000 to 6000 square feet, less than $1.50 a square foot, and near Caltrain / BART in San Bruno. Here's a useful Craigslist search.

Notes

There have been a number of incubators in the Bay Area. Many have failed because with easy access to real estate and the virtual flexbility of working from home, the need for interim housing is low. Current incubator space is very expensive (as much as eight times more expensive than regular office space) or is usually coupled with direct investment of some sort.

April 2011:  We are looking to start a new co-working site in the Burlingame/San Mateo area, which will have ready access to the airport as well as Caltrain & BART.  We will be forming a "roaming" network with others around the Bay Area, so members can use them as way stations in their travels to cliients, VCs, etc.  This will be general purpose co-working, rather than aimed at coders and developers.  Please let me know if you have an interest in joining, helping, advising, or whatever.
