Established arts loft / community organization seeks two new members

$700

NOTE: We are seeking one person for long-term, and another for a 3-6 month

sublet.  Starting in the fall, we will be starting a residency program, and will be

looking for artists, creatives, political folks, etc who are interested in coming to

New York for several months to work on artistic and/or activist projects.  We

can assist you in seeking grants, and may be able to subsidize rent for the

residency program.  For more information, please contact [email protected]

* Overview *

We are an established residential community and arts organization,

looking for two smart, artistically-inclined, together/employed

20-30-something people to live in our loft and join forces on a range

of creative and community projects. Ability to play well with others

a must, as is motivation to be part of our various endeavors. We are

only interested in bringing in someone who is excited about teaming up

with us to really make use of the space, people and resources we have

available for events, artistic endeavors, etc - both in our space and

throughout the Bushwick/East Williamsburg community. Having

skills/resources/ideas/experience/networks to contribute is a HUGE

plus.

That said, we all have jobs and lives outside the space and the

day-to-day lifestyle is pretty normal, relaxed and domestic. We're not

looking to lose ourselves in collectiveness or be "on" all the time --

we're just trying to build community and pursue interesting cultural

endeavors on a regular basis. As we move into the summer, we'll be

working hard on the Bushwick Summer Arts Festival, as well as a range

of other events and projects. Our activities (both ongoing and in

development) include:

- a monthly(-ish) community dinner

- friendly, interactive and inclusive art events

- casually staged performance, music or video nights

- public celebrations and a community festival (for the Bushwick and

  Bourgewick sets alike)

- the creation/curation of a locally-focused publication and social

  networking site (www.BushwickArts.com)

- writing cultural criticism, and

- developing a working group and organizing strategy around

sustainability and gentrification in our neighborhood.

If you're jazzed about any of this, or have your own ideas that you

think might be compatible, we'd love to hear from you!

* The Space *

We have two L-shaped rooms available, each about 120 sq.ft. (maybe a

little bigger). One room has one window and a built-in loft, and the

other has two windows and no built-in loft. Both room have ~11ft

ceilings, wood floors and white brick walls. You're welcome to

paint/build/modify as you see fit.

The loft itself is a full top floor of a classic brick loft building

(4200sqft), and is located 7 minutes walk from the Morgan L or the

Myrtle JMZ. We have huge windows on all four sides (~25 total),

11-12ft ceilings, wood floors, freight elevator, and roof access with

unobstructed 360 degree view, including pretty much all of Manhattan.

We have a big spiffy kitchen (with dishwasher and two fridges), two

shared bathrooms (one has a bathtub with a capital T), free laundry in

the apartment, wifi, individually-controlled heat in each room, and

lots of other niceties like real soundproof walls, real electrical

outlets, and a massive common space which doubles as a workshop and

project studio. Also on offer - use of our cache of video, sound and

light gear and copious amounts of art, craft and construction tools

and materials, plus a large and growing group of committed and

inpiring participants and collaborators in Bushwick and beyond.

Each person pays a flat $100/mo for utilities (which covers water,

gas, electric, wireless high-speed internet, cable, unlimited long

distance phone, laundry, etc) and a flat $15/mo house contribution for

shared resources (TP, dish soap, etc).

We're looking for at least a six month commitment, but would prefer a

year. The rooms will be available a few days after March 1, but we're

happy to have you move in March 15th or April 1st. First, last and

security required to move in (i.e., $2100 up front).

* Lifestyle Stuff *

We're against smoking in the house, heavy drinking & drug use,

dirtiness (as opposed to messiness), excessive

cleanliness/neatfreakery and drama. We're in favor of extravagant

brunches, friendliness and respectfulness, hanging out and doing

creative projects, etc.

* How to Apply *

If you're interested, please respond with some actual information

about yourself: who you are, what you do, why you are interested in

this sort of living/working situation and what you have to bring to

it, if you were a kitchen utensil what would you be and why, etc.

We'll be doing interviews starting soon, and would love to have you

come check it out!
