Why Sacramento Needs Coworking

These days, coworkers don’t have to work for the same company. As a noun, the word “coworker” typically conjures up the default image of people sitting inside little cubes.

But no more.

We are on the cusp of a new economy where workers reclaim and repurpose stale philosophies. Enter coworking, and a movement driven by creative professionals who refuse to be bound by the stodgy cubicle and the 9 to 5 schedule.

These are the people redefining “coworker.” They do all kinds of creative things; they think differently about working, business, food, economics, and even church. They are learning how to cowork in every aspect of life.

They are members of the creative class, which, as Richard Florida writes, is quickly becoming the dominating working class and will have huge economic impacts if creatives in key metropolitan areas can collaborate as a cohesive group.

The spirit behind coworking is inherent in the word, a verb: working together, collaborating. It’s more than a single location; rather it’s a way to harness this city’s Creative Class. To cowork is to collaborate – something that Sacramento desperately needs.

CoWorking Has Arrived In Sacramento!

The Urban Hive is a community of independent creative professionals sick of the status quo; sick of working in isolation from a home office; sick of the social disconnect and noise at the local coffee shop. People with a flexible workstyle need a place to refresh, to find creative stimulation and to collaborate with individuals of similar ilk. We like to think that our community provides a sanctuary for these Creatives, for the successful independent who has escaped (or simply avoided--bravo!) Corporate America.

The Urban Hive is the un-office where creative independent professionals can go to work, create, collaborate, refresh and (yes) play. Think of it as a great company culture, just without the company. We think everyone should want to go to work. The place where we work should enhance the work that we do. And we believe that there is immeasureable value in working alongside like-minded creative professionals and entrepreneurs.

We are located in an amazing renovated 1930s brick warehouse in the heart of Midtown Sacramento. The industrial modern space includes two conference rooms, retail space, art and design studios, and even an occasional traditional office. More than the space, though, Creatives at The Urban Hive benefit from the community environment where spontaneous brainstorming stimulates idea exchange, fosters networking and even provides opportunities for project collaboration.

We offer memberships ranging from $50 per month to $275 per month. All memberships include a seat in Sacramento's coolest workspace, free wifi, free coffee from Old Soul (feel free to add to the coffee kitty if you are an excessive consumer like we are), and sometimes even cereal. Certain memberships include use of our conference room, brainstorming room, private offices, and general use of our space for events (with special pricing). Need a private office or design studio? We have some of those available, too.

Still need more info to get a better feel for what we are about? Well, we encourage hands-on research. Come on by and give us a try, for free!

Beyond the wish-list.

There are definitive signs that Sacramento is ready for a coworking space. Yet, no-one can be sure unless proper market study is complete. This is exactly what needs to be done next. Please, visit http://sac-coworking.com and participate in the survey (the link is on the front page). Also, make sure to contact the team that works on the coworking space project as any input and feedback will be greatly appreciated. The coworking space is to be oriented towards the needs of the community

Looking for co-working space in Midtown that pretty much has all the items on the Wish List? I think we might have an option for everyone. My partner and I have been developing Capsity Offices in Midtown Sacramento. What we've come to now was catalyzed by the concept of co-working and its still evolving. Currently our prices for day use offices are $4-$8 / h. We have a large conference and small conference ($30/hr and $15/hr respectively). But our main thing is...a fun and collaborate atmosphere. We have a decent sized parking area in the back for events and we have a lot of random gatherings. Just the other day we had UNO @ 1:00, so people in the office could take a break and take part in a simple yet competitive game of UNO. We're currently working on coordinating events for Global Entrepreneurship Week in Sacramento. Check: http://gew.sactivist.com. If you want to find out more information about our Virtual Office / Co-working location visit: http://www.officedynamo.com. Please visit and give us feedback. We think this is a good start but by no means is this our final vision.
